"C'est l'américaine! La-bas!"

After observing a few classes the past two days, I've become the new celebrity of sorts here at the school. Now when I arrive the kids who I haven't me yet run up to me and ask me if I'm the new American girl, what my name is, and if I'm coming back tomorrow. Since I'm observing each class before I begin to teach, I've been talking primarily in French (not English like I'm supposed to).

So today, in the second class (CM2= 9-10 year-olds) I answered questions the kids had about the American life. Thank God Olivier warned me about the questions during recess or else I would have laughed in their cute little faces. Translation of questions below...

  • "Do you eat eggs and bacon for breakfast?"
  • "Are all Americans fat?"
  • "Are American dogs ferocious?"
  • "Are there a lot of stars (celebrities)?"
  • "If a fugitive runs, can the policeman kill him?"
  • "Do you always eat hamburgers and hot dogs?"
  • "Are all Americans rich? Are you rich?"
  • "Was the USA better before Bush or is it better with Obama?"
  • "Are there a lot of gangs? What do they kill?"
After showing them a picture of Izzy and explaining that she loves to give kisses, they were more so interested in asking personal questions than the one's they had already prepared (such as how much money do you have, do you have a boyfriend, etc etc).

I'm glad we give such a good impression to the rest of the world (thanks film/tv industry). It's no wonder why there are so many threats to our nation; everyone thinks we all have guns, kill for the heck of it, and are fat and rich. Bravo!

Oy vey, I can already tell this year will be full of funny stories. I can't wait to see what the 5/6 year-olds ask me on Thursday....

Ciao!
